Dear Mr Brown -

I trust you were not made late at your appointment by waiting for me -

I drove up to Bond Street as soon as I possibly could get away -

Tomorrow morning I shall be at the studio and ready for you at 9.30 as you propose - Meanwhile I told Howell^[3] [p. 2] to say to you that you might as well write at once tonight to Miss Garrett^[4] to arrange for her visit tomorrow afternoon -

If you had not understood this perhaps you had better settle with her the first thing tomorrow morning, and then come on at once to me for preliminaries -

The visit had better be somewhere about 3 or 4 o'clock - not later because of the poor light - indeed 3 is quite late enough -

Ernest George Brown (1853 or 1854-1915), assistant manager at the Fine Art Society [more]. JW exhibited his Venetian work in two exhibitions, Etchings of Venice, The Fine Art Society, London, 1880 and Venice Pastels, The Fine Art Society, London, 1881.

3.  Howell
Charles Augustus ('Owl') Howell (1840? - d.1890), entrepreneur [more]. An account of a dispute involving JW and Howell is given in Whistler, James McNeill, The Piker Papers. The Painter-Etchers' Society and Mr. Whistler, London, 1881. They remained in contact until at least February 1882.

4.  Miss Garrett
Possibly either Rhoda or Agnes ('the Misses') Garrett, interior decorators, who lived at 2 Gower Street.
