The Tower House
Dear Sir, -
Pray present my compliments to the Gentlemen of the Council of the Glasgow Institute. I should be very pleased to send the portrait of my mother[3] to their Exhibition[4] as they are good enough to wish request, if the following conditions can be fulfilled:- complied with:-
1st. That I have your promise that the picture shall be returned without fail in time for me to send it to the Paris International Exhibition[5], I cannot say exactly what may be the exact date for such sending, but you must undertake to return me the picture immediately upon receiving from me a letter or telegram requiring it, even should your Exhibition not be closed.
2nd. That you undertake its careful packing and sending from my house to the your Exhibition and its return in the same condition.
3rd. That you have it insured for one thousand pounds guineas against all righ risks from the time it leaves [p. 2] my house, until its return.
What you say about the interest caused by the Exhibition of "Carlyle"[6] is very gratifying, but "the good fruit" that it will bears has borne, is I fancy, not yet ready for eating.
I saw some letter in a paper[7] proposing its purchase, and a telegram to Mr Graves[8] was shown to me asking its price - but beyond that I have heard nothing further.
I should be much obliged to you, personally, personally, if you would kindly, send me any fur other letters upon the subject that may have been printed and kindly give me some account of what took really did take place.
