My dear Mac -
The invitation to your Banquet[2] came the morning I left & I have only just been enabled to answer - I am really distressed that I shall not be able to return by the 1 of May - I am making studies here for a statue of Lord Dufferin[3] which is to be done for Calcutta & began to day - and can neither assist at the R. A! [p. 2] Banquet nor yours - I am very anxious to know who will be in the chair - If you find time for a line it will be most refreshing to hear from you -
It is cold & wet & stormy & as nasty as can be - Cannot last much longer -
I feel I will lose a great deal at not being present on the 1st May - I am sure there will be capital speeches & real Enthusiasm - By the bye have you seen Lanteri[4] since [p. 3] his return from Glasgow? If not - Do go & see him - I asked him to call on you but he is always so shy - He will tell you of the triumph of your works[5] there & the Enthusiasm of the native artists[6] - all wish to do like wise - & even such a wish only is meritorious - in the right direction - but it will interest you to hear details from Lanteri

A dinner, to congratulate JW on being made an Honorary Member of the Royal Academy of Munich, was held at the Criterion in Piccadilly on 1 May 1889. It was organised by W. C. Symons. JW took an active part in promoting it and deciding who should or should not be invited.
