PARIS,
LE Aug. 19. 1892.
Dear Mr. Reid -
I have received your second cheque for £400 - making, with the first for £200 - six hundred pounds for the "Dame au Brodequin Jaune[2]." - That's all perfect - many thanks - I have telegraphed to send you up the picture to-day - so doubtless it has already left London - or will do so tomorrow -
Now tell me how it is that you, who are by way of being one of the most independent of Dealers - and indeed agressive [sic] - as becomes one so greatly committed to Whistler - should in this matter of the "Open Letter[3]", show something like anxiety - or uncertainty - or some thing to say the least of it a tardiness in letting off the little hand grenade I have entrusted you with? - What was the matter? - I always like to know these things -
Always sincerely
J McN. Whistler
Saturday - Didnt get this off last night - so now am enabled to enclose letter[4] from Goupil's[5] - So that is satisfactory -
I have many[6] reasons for wishing the picture to be always officially known as "La Dame au Brodequin Jaune" and not by any other name -
About Chicago[7], one great point is of course your kind promise to stand by me with these pictures -
