Dear Charles Price -

I really cannot help writing just to tell you how intensly[4] [sic] pleased I am with your work[5] in the Academy. Your etchings and your painting I think most highly of - they are to me most artistic - They are of the very very few things that are of value in the exhibition - The etchings are exquisite - I might say much about them but I dis-[p. 2]like writing - Come and see me and let me tell you how charmed I am with them and the painting.

Ever Yours -

Whistler -

My compliments to Mrs Edwards[6]

Envelope:

E. Edwards Esq
Thames Bank House
Sunbury on Thames
S. W.
[stamp:] POSTAGE / ONE PENNY
[postmark:] LONDON E / 5 / MY / 63

Notes:

1.  [5 May 1863]
The paper has a partial 1862 watermark ('NSON / 862'). It is not certain that the envelope belongs to this letter, although it has been used to date it. A note made by Rosalind Birnie Philip (1873-1958), JW's sister-in-law [more], when transcribing this letter, added 'Envelope addressed to E. Edwards, Esq., Thamesbank House, Sunbury on Thames, S.W.; postmark date May 1. 63.' (GUL Whistler LB4/3). She may have misread the postmark. This envelope is definitely postmarked 5 May 1863, and the content of the letter is more appropriate than that of another letter (#09079) which could have fitted the same envelope.

2.  Edwin Edwards
Edwin Edwards (1823-1879), lawyer, painter and etcher [more]. It is not clear why JW addressed him as 'Charles Price', but the name appears in a series of letters from 7 April 1862 to [17 September 1864] (#03146, #02994, #03200, #03299, #09082, #09083, #09084).

5.  work
The 95th Exhibition of the Royal Academy of Arts, Royal Academy, London, 1863, opened at the beginning of May. It included two paintings and three etchings: Edwin Edwards, Lynmouth Harbour (z23); Edwin Edwards, Kempton Park, Sunbury (z24) ; Edwin Edwards, The Ship Canal, Exeter (z25); Edwin Edwards, Plymouth from Mount Edgcumbe (z26); Edwin Edwards, Devonport (z27) (cat. nos. 644 and 958; 951, 955 and 1001). Béraldi, who admired Edwards's work, and thought him much under-rated, recorded 376 plates by Edwards, including two out of 50 etchings published by Holloway (Edwin Edwards, Lynmouth Harbour (z23) ; Edwin Edwards, Plymouth from Mount Edgcumbe (z26) (Beraldi, Henri, Les Graveurs du XIXe. Siècle: Guide de l'Amateur d'Estampes Modernes, 12 vols, Paris, 1885-1892, VI, p. 84, nos. 13, 24). He also mentions The Ship Canal, Exeter (ibid., p. 85), but not Devonport, unless under another title.

6.  Mrs Edwards
Amelia Ann Blanford Edwards (1831-1892), writer and Egyptologist [more].
