Tite Street -

Aug. 23rd 1881 -

Dear Howell -

When you arrange for the removal of the various things belonging to Mr Blott[2], now in the Studio of the late Signor Pinte[3], will you kindly send to me to the above address a small destroyed panel[4] (my work) left there some time since by me. This picture representing a girl in Japanese dress, known in Academy catalogue as the scarf, belongs to one of my clients -

Yours very truly

J A McN. Whistler

The Scarf (YMSM 59) was exhibited at 97th Exhibition of the Royal Academy of Arts, Royal Academy, London, 1865 (cat. no. 569). It was probably destroyed by JW at the time of his bankruptcy. A caricature of the painting is included in 'Private View of the Royal Academy,' Punch, vol. 48, 13 May 1865, p. 196.
