Dear Whistler

I was glad to see in yesterday's paper[2] that you had scored another point in France -

There's only one thing left to do: take the gold medal at the Salon of '92[3] with my marine[4]! (It should be in Capital letters) -

Your "Arrangement in Black[5]" & the [p. 2] [illegible] water-color have been shown to the good people of Boston at the St Botolph Club[6], and my wife's[7] letters say that the said good people opened their eyes very wide in consequence; and of my personal knowledge there are at least half a dozen in Boston perhaps a dozen who know a [p. 3] good thing when they see it -

I am not in first-rate shape yet: but am fairly on my legs & we are going down to Rome in a day or two -

Present my compliments to Mrs Whistler[8] & hopes that the influenza this winter has spared you both.

Always yours

J C Bancroft
