My Dear President
I am glad to find from the Secretary's letter[2] that the [resolut?] motions were not withdrawn as your wire[3] intimated. I find I have to renew the guarantee to the Society on behalf of certain members, against possible loss. I am writing by this post to them all, asking them to renew their [p. 2] guarantee & enclosing a stamped envelope to ensure reply. Dowdeswell[4] who wrote some time ago having received two answers only. Kindly send me by return if possible, Stott of Oldham's[5] & Waldo Storey's[6] [sic] addresses. They were I believe guarantors. You of course renew your guarantee. Do you know where your "White Girl[7]" is?
I meet constantly an American lady[8], who sees it every day she says when she is at home. There [p. 3] is some "personal" difficulty about our getting it she hints, but she has written to ask about it. You will see I have lost no time in setting to work, as soon as I realized what I could do. I shall come to town next week, but for a few days now, I am resting absolutely, by the Doctors orders. I have had one of my oldest & most intimate friends[9] with me, & when staying with me he contracted malignant [p. 4] typhoid, & died last Sunday. I was very seedy at the time, & the shock has quite pulled me down & unnerved me. So I am resting a bit, & hope to [be] all right next week.
