Dear Praeses[4]!
You will be glad I am sure to learn that as usual, tout est[5] pour le mieux dans le meilleur des mondes! I found the missing paper under my hand in ten minutes after I came back! Such is the psychological [p. 2] effect of a pleasant dinner with the chief of the Koh'en - Oor[6]! which, being interpreted, means the Diamond of the Desert!
I am off to Paris in the morning bearing with me a benign recollection of hours that were as seconds! If I can in any way be of use [p. 3] to you at Paris[7], or even at Rome, (where you will remember Raphael[8] died though quite of his own will & not because anybody wished him to!) command me, soit à La Légation de Etats-Unis Avenue Marceau - Soit à 14 Quattro Fontane,

6. chief of the Koh'en - Oor
Presumably a reference to the Koh-i-noor diamond (108.93 carats) which was discovered in the Godavari river in central India 4,000 years ago. The 'chief' was perhaps a covert reference to Queen Victoria who was given the diamond after it was displayed in London in 1851 at the Great Exhibition.
