Mon cher Monsieur,

J'ai été bien content de recevoir de vos nouvelles; aujourd'hui, le 1 fevrier, je vais expédier le petit paquet contenant votre médaille, à Rotterdam au soins de Mons Smith capit. du Batavier. J'espère qu'elle vous parviendra de cette façon en bon état. Vous n'avez donc pas reçu un programme de l'exposition à Rotterdam^[4]? [p. 2] J'espère que vous y enverrez quelque oeuvre, surtout quelque tableau, parceque je désire beaucoup voir votre peinture. L'occasion se présente si rarement de pré voir des peintures anglaises, et ce que j'ai appris de la votre me pique vivement. Si vous n'avez pas de programme adressez vous à M. Schutze van Houten^[5], secrétaire à Rotterdam, un homme très obligeant.

Avez vous vu, ou non, que la première partie de mon étude sur Rembrandt^[6] a paru? Le Westminster Review^[7] de Janv. 64 q en parle en deux [p. 3] mots, mais ne parait pas avoir bien compris la portée du livre. Vous qui aimez Rembrandt, j'aimerais beaucoup que vous le lisiez ^{(je l'ai écrit en français)}; je désirerais vous avoir envoyé un exemplaire; mais pour le moment je n'en possède pas un moi même, ayant donné mon propre exemplaire. J'espère bien vous revoir une fois en Hollande, peut être cet été, à l'exposition de Rotterdam; en attendant je vous salue amicalement,

My dear Sir,

I was very pleased to receive your news; today, February 1st, I am going to send the little parcel containing your medal, to Rotterdam care of Mr Smith capt of the Batavier. I hope that in this way it will arrive in good condition. You have not then received a prospectus for the exhibition at Rotterdam? [p. 2] I hope you will send some work there, a picture especially, because I should very much like to see your painting. The opportunity to see English paintings occurs so rarely and what I have heard of yours really excites me. If you have no prospectus write to Mr Schutze van Houten, the secretary in Rotterdam, a very obliging man.

Have you seen that the first part of my study of Rembrandt has appeared? The Westminster Review for January 64 mentions it briefly [p. 3], but does not appear to have understood the scope of the book. I should very much like you, who love Rembrandt, to read it (I wrote it in French); I should like to have sent a copy to you; but at the moment I do not even possess one myself, having given away my own copy. I hope to see you again in Holland one day, perhaps this summer, at the Rotterdam exhibition; in the meantime I send you my good wishes in friendship.
