Dear Mr Whistler
The hurried telegram[2] I sent from Edinburgh yesterday afternoon (to 36. Tite St: Chelsea.) has no doubt made you acquainted with the fact of yr: election as an H. R. S. A.
Unfortunately the meeting lasted so long afterwards that I could not [p. 2] write you before leaving at night for Glasgow. I cannot tell you how much pleasure it gives me that you should have received the highest official recognition in our power to give - & that it should have been given unanimously - a tribute from the members [p. 3] old & young.
It is certainly a great honour to us - I only wish it were as much to you - but I know the spirit in which you gave me permission to go forward -
What I said was seconded formally by W. B. Hole[3] - a staunch friend of yours. After the Election result of [p. 4] the ballot was made known the President[4] expressed his pleasure to us. After that we all expressed ours to each other! It was a large & representative meeting. You will no doubt have the official notice in a day or two.
I hope sincerely that your health[5] has improved & that it will gain still more from the coming summer.
We are much beholden to you for approving of Mr Studd's[6] lending his beautiful picture now in[7] the Academy Exhibition[8].
