My dear Whistler
Your two pictures have just been deliver[e]d here -
I like your portrait of Lady Lonsdale very much, but I trust that you will withdraw that of Monsieur Duret, the work [p. 2] is so incomplete & slightly made out that I cannot accept it at the Grosvenor -
I wish my dear Whistler that you would do yourself and me more justice [p. 3] and not send work that cannot do you or me credit

2. portrait of Lady Lonsdale
JW did not paint Gladys Mary Juliet Herbert (d.1917), Lady Lonsdale, later Countess de Grey [more]. The painting was Arrangement in Black: La Dame au brodequin jaune - Portrait of Lady Archibald Campbell (YMSM 242), and it was exhibited at 8th Summer Exhibition, Grosvenor Gallery, London, 1884.
