Your two pictures have just been deliver[e]d here -
I like your portrait of Lady Lonsdale[2] very much, but I trust that you will withdraw that of Monsieur Duret[3], the work [p. 2] is so incomplete & slightly made out that I cannot accept it at the Grosvenor -
I wish my dear Whistler that you would do yourself and me more justice [p. 3] and not send work that cannot do you or me credit

Sir Coutts Lindsay (1824-1913), Bart., co-founder of the Grosvenor Gallery [more]. There is a draft of JW's conciliatory reply (#01868).
2. portrait of Lady Lonsdale
JW did not paint Gladys Mary Juliet Herbert (d.1917), Lady Lonsdale, later Countess de Grey [more]. The painting was Arrangement in Black: La Dame au brodequin jaune - Portrait of Lady Archibald Campbell (YMSM 242), and it was exhibited at 8th Summer Exhibition, Grosvenor Gallery, London, 1884.
3. Monsieur Duret
Théodore Duret (1838-1927), art critic and collector [more]. Arrangement en couleur chair et noir: Portrait de Théodore Duret (YMSM 252) was finally exhibited at 103rd exhibition, Ouvrages de peinture, sculpture, architecture, gravure et lithographie des artistes vivants, Palais des Champs Elysées, Paris, 1885.
