Decr 9 1890
Dear Mr. Whistler
I was asked yesterday to sell the portrait of Miss Franklin[2] by yourself - which picture we lent to the Exhibition[3] at Paris on the distinct understanding that it should be returned to us here, by some accident it was delivered at your studio and you have [p. 2] never returned it here as you undertook to do when I lent it as we can now sell it - and you have failed to carry out your promise of sending a cheque on account which was the sole condition on in which I agreed to sell it to you = I consider that picture has not been sold to you and must ask you to let me have it back at once
[p. 3] Awaiting your reply
I remain
Yours faithfully
Algernon Graves
J McNeil Whistler Esq
