Dear Sir

I have arranged with Mr Haines^[2] to come and varnish the Carlyle^[3] before it goes to Glasgow

My father^[4] wishes me to say that if he lets it go there you should really send him a cheque on account^[5], so kindly let him have one if possible -

I think I have found [p. 2] a customer for the Effie Deans^[6] and he may want the Miss Franklin^[7] to match[.] if so I suppose I can let him have it and that you do not care to retain it now it has been to Brussels

There has been nothing paid on account of it yet, an early reply to this will oblige also telling me to varnish the Carlyle

Arrangement in Grey and Black, No. 2: Portrait of Thomas Carlyle (YMSM 137) was about to be sent to the International Exhibition, Kelvingrove, Glasgow, 1888 (cat. no. 614).

JW still owed a substantial sum to Graves on loans secured through depositing his pictures over several years, including £220 on the Carlyle portrait (see memorandum dating from December 1888, #01827).

6.  Effie Deans
Arrangement in Yellow and Grey: Effie Deans (YMSM 183). The picture did not sell until October 1888 when it was purchased by the dealers Dowdeswells & Dowsdeswell.

7.  Miss Franklin
Arrangement in Black and Brown: The Fur Jacket (YMSM 181), a portrait of Mary Maud Franklin (1857- ca 1941), JW's model and mistress [more]. It had recently been exhibited at the [Exhibition], Société des XX (Vingts), Brussels, 1888.

8.  pencil sketch
This is a slight sketch of a box (or possibly a floor plan) numbered '100'. It is unclear whether it is of JW's hand.
