I enclose copies of the two referring to Mrs Whistlers portrait^[2] - The two nocturnes^[3] referred to are the one sold to Stratford and one you had away I think - it was delivered I believe to your order to a gentleman in Kensington

2.  Mrs Whistlers portrait
Arrangement in Grey and Black: Portrait of the Painter's Mother (YMSM 101). On 9 September 1878, this was one of two pictures deposited by Charles Augustus ('Owl') Howell (1840? - d.1890), entrepreneur [more] as security on a loan of £100 from Graves (see A. Graves to JW, #01797). The 'copies' were letters from Graves, probably #01797, #01798.

3.  two nocturnes
Probably Nocturne: Black and Gold - The Fire Wheel (YMSM 169) and Nocturne in Black and Gold: The Falling Rocket (YMSM 170), which had been deposited with Graves as security for a loan of £85. This was not repaid for at least a decade, according to Graves' account as sent to JW in December 1888 (#01827). Nocturne in Grey and Gold (YMSM 155) and another nocturne of Battersea Reach were also deposited briefly, but on 9 September Howell arranged to substitute Arrangement in Brown and Black: Portrait of Miss Rosa Corder (YMSM 203) for them (#02184). The nocturnes 'sold to Stratford' and delivered 'to a gentlemen in Kensington' may have been those of Battersea Reach.

4.  my father
Henry Graves (1806-1892), print dealer and founder of H. Graves and Co. [more].

5.  Mrs Meux
A reference to Harmony in Pink and Grey: Portrait of Lady Meux (YMSM 229). JW had asked Henry Graves to consider having the portrait engraved (see JW to H. Graves, #10917). JW exhibited the picture at 6th Summer Exhibition, Grosvenor Gallery, London, 1882, (cat. no. 48).
