Notes:
1. Algernon Graves
Algernon Graves (1845-1922), of H. Graves and Co., print dealers [more].
2. Miss Corder
Arrangement in Brown and Black: Portrait of Miss Rosa Corder (YMSM 203) and Arrangement in Grey and Black: Portrait of the Painter's Mother (YMSM 101) were deposited with Messrs Graves as security for an advance of £100 (see Howell's letter to Graves on 6 November 1878, #02185).
3. two nocturnes
These may have been Nocturne: Black and Gold - The Fire Wheel (YMSM 169) and Nocturne in Black and Gold: The Falling Rocket (YMSM 170). They were deposited with Graves as security for a loan of £85, which was not repaid for at least a decade, according to Graves' account as sent to JW in December 1888 (#01827). Nocturne in Grey and Gold (YMSM 155) and another Nocturne of Battersea Reach were also deposited briefly, but on 9 September Howell arranged to substitute his portrait of Rosa Corder (Arrangement in Brown and Black: Portrait of Miss Rosa Corder (YMSM 203)) for them (#02184). Messrs Graves probably lent a Nocturne to International Exhibition, Edinburgh, 1886 (see Nocturne (YMSM 171)).
4. Mr Howell
Charles Augustus ('Owl') Howell (1840? - d.1890), entrepreneur [more].
