I hope and believe you are wrong about Moon[3] - and I quite agree and sympathize with you about Houg[h]ton[4] for whose work I have great esteem - I am most sorry that I may not be of your party tomorrow and I thank you for thinking of me on the occasion - but it is impossible. I have already an engagement - Also it is my miserable fate to have another for [p. 2] Wednesday - pas de chance[5]! -
Make my kindest regards to Mrs Bateman[6] and her daughters and shake the hand of Irving[7] for me -

Possibly Henry George Moon (1857-1905), landscape painter [more]. The subject under discussion is not clear, but may involve membership of some social or art club; it is not entirely clear whether JW likes or dislikes Moon or his work.
4. Houg[h]ton
Possibly Arthur Boyd Houghton (1836-1875), painter and illustrator [more].

6. Mrs Bateman
Sidney Frances Bateman (1823-1881), née Cowell, actress and theatre manager [more]. Of her eight children, three of her four daughters were actresses: Kate Josephine Bateman (1842 or 1843-1917), later Mrs Crowe, a popular actress [more], Ellen Bateman (b. 1845), actress [more], and Isabel Bateman (1854-1934), an actress who became a nun [more].
7. Irving
John Henry Brodribb alias Henry Irving (1838-1905), actor, Director and manager of the Lyceum Theatre [more].
