Dear Grapel -

I hope and believe you are wrong about Moon[3] - and I quite agree and sympathize with you about Houg[h]ton[4] for whose work I have great esteem - I am most sorry that I may not be of your party tomorrow and I thank you for thinking of me on the occasion - but it is impossible. I have already an engagement - Also it is my miserable fate to have another for [p. 2] Wednesday - pas de chance[5]! -

Make my kindest regards to Mrs Bateman[6] and her daughters and shake the hand of Irving[7] for me -

Ever Yours

J A McN Whistler.

I have no row this year with the Academy[8] as I have sent them nothing!

Notes:

1.  [May/June 1873?]
JW was at this address between February 1867 and June 1878, but his reference to the Royal Academy suggests this was written in or about May 1873 (see below).

2.  William Grapel
William Grapel (b. 1822), barrister-at-law and collector [more].

3.  Moon
Possibly Henry George Moon (1857-1905), landscape painter [more]. The subject under discussion is not clear, but may involve membership of some social or art club; it is not entirely clear whether JW likes or dislikes Moon or his work.

4.  Houg[h]ton
Possibly Arthur Boyd Houghton (1836-1875), painter and illustrator [more].

5.  pas de chance
Fr., bad luck.

6.  Mrs Bateman
Sidney Frances Bateman (1823-1881), née Cowell, actress and theatre manager [more]. Of her eight children, three of her four daughters were actresses: Kate Josephine Bateman (1842 or 1843-1917), later Mrs Crowe, a popular actress [more], Ellen Bateman (b. 1845), actress [more], and Isabel Bateman (1854-1934), an actress who became a nun [more].

7.  Irving
John Henry Brodribb alias Henry Irving (1838-1905), actor, Director and manager of the Lyceum Theatre [more].

8.  Academy
JW sent Arrangement in Grey and Black: Portrait of the Painter's Mother (YMSM 101) to the 104th Exhibition of the Royal Academy of Arts, Royal Academy, London, 1872. He did not exhibit paintings there again.
