Notes:

1.  16 August 1863
The bill runs from 8-15 August 1863.

2.  Hôtel des Pays-bas
JW was in Amsterdam with Alphonse Legros (1837-1911), painter, etcher and art teacher [more]. According to Dumaurier, 'Jimmy gone to Holland with Legros, to etch the night-watch.' (letter dated [August, 1863], Du Maurier, Daphne, ed., The Young George du Maurier: A Selection of his Letters, 1860-67, London, 1951, p. 210). He also visited Tentoonstelling van Kunstwerken van Levende Meesters, Hague School of Art, Princessegracht, 1863, where his Thames etchings won a gold medal (see Heijbroek, J. F. and Margaret F. MacDonald, Whistler and Holland, Zwolle and Amsterdam, 1997, pp. 49-53).

3.  bougie
Fr.: wax candle. The bill covers the basic expenses of cab, baggage, room, housing, as well as food (cutlets and omelettes) and drink (lemonade and cognac).

4.  33.66.
This was the result of JW's long division, further down the page.

5.  147.15
This was the final total in the hotel's bill, given above, and JW had to use long division to work out the currency.
