JW was awarded the medal for Arrangement in Grey and Black: Portrait of the Painter's Mother (YMSM 101) at the 101st exhibition, Ouvrages de peinture, sculpture, architecture, gravure et lithographie des artistes vivants, Palais des Champs Elysées, Paris, 1883. For some unknown reason, it found its way into Whitehead's hands. JW asked him via Brown whether he would return it in exchange for a drawing or etching (see E. G. Brown to J. Whitehead, #01384).
