Dear Miss Phillip [sic],
Kindly excuse a typewritten letter, as I am over head & ears in work.
Here is the list of the silver with the values I propose to set against them for insurance. Kindly let me know if they are satisfactory.
I see that by mistake 18 sweetmeat baskets were included taken away. These will altogether overbalance the rest of the exhibit, & therefore I propose only to show 12, which was the number we arranged for, & which is the number contained in the list.
We are hanging the back of the show cases with a handsome rose red tapestry, & shall do the same with your case unless Mr Whistler objects-. Can you let me have the napkins, if you wish them things to be placed on white, not later than Monday.
I shall ask you & Mr Whistler to come & see them on Wednesday, when I hope to have the place in some what ship shape. We shall not begin hanging until Tuesday afternoon.

Rosalind Birnie Philip (1873-1958), JW's sister-in-law [more]. This letter relates to an exhibition of old silver then taking place at the Fine Art Society, to which JW had agreed to lend some choice pieces from his collection. Frederick Wedmore (1844-1921), art critic [more]. In November 1902, JW exhibited Grenat et or: Le Petit Cardinal (YMSM 469) at the 12th Exhibition, Society of Portrait Painters, New Gallery, London, 1902. Wedmore described it as a work already seen, which offended JW, so he wrote to the Standard in protest (Whistler, James McNeill, 'Une Dernière Incarnation,' The Standard, 21 November 1902; #09448). The letter was reprinted in several other newspapers. He collected the correspondence in Whistler, James McNeill, An Interrupted Correspondence, Chelsea, 1902 [GM, A.25].
