THE WHITE HOUSE,
CHELSEA EMBANKMENT.

As you wont "come in without an order" I send you one! Though I think it shockingly mean to have kept away from the show[3] while it is so very hot! -

Do look round tomorrow at about 2 - to half past.

Notes:

1.  [May 1879?]
Dated from address, and to the 'order', which perhaps is a reference to bailiffs in the wake of JW's recent banckruptcy.

2.  Algernon Charles Swinburne
Algernon Charles Swinburne (1837-1909), poet and critic [more]. Although this note has been associated with Swinburne, the tone is more like that of JW's letters to Charles Augustus ('Owl') Howell (1840? - d.1890), entrepreneur [more].

3.  show
JW used the phrase 'the show' to refer to his financial affairs.
