Notes:
1. [2/16] May [1889]
The invitation apparently dates from immediately after the private view on 1 May of the [Exhibition of the work of J. McN. Whistler], College for Working Men and Women, London, 1889, since it is written on a card for the private view.
2. L. E. Lefèvre
L. E. Lefèvre, unidentified.
3. EXHIBITION
The exhibition was organised by Walter Richard Sickert (1860-1942), artist and writer on art [more]. Although it contained such major paintings as Arrangement in Grey and Black, No. 2: Portrait of Thomas Carlyle (YMSM 137), it appears to have been rather a low key affair, and was inadequately publicised, so it received comparatively few reviews.
4. Lady Halsbury
Wilhelmina, Lady Halsbury (d. 1927), née Woodfall, second wife of Hardinge Stanley Giffard, 1st Earl of Halsbury [more]. It may be that her name was meant to be deleted, with the rest of the line.
