Dear Mr. Whistler,
The drawing of "Sara"[2] has come with the lithographs and I will do my best to sell it but you said you wanted thirty guineas for it. Thirty-five is just a little too much to do anything with a small profit for us. It is a very pretty thing indeed.
The only man you have to thank is Mr Herbert Marshall[3] who has agreed to move his exhibition into the large room for the last week of his exhibition to make room for [p. 2] you. This will not hurt him as he has sold nearly the whole of his show
I am glad everything is working well as regards to show.
With kind regards,
Yours most sincerely
Ernest G. Brown.
J. McN. Whistler Esq

Notes:
1. Ernest George Brown
Ernest George Brown (1853 or 1854-1915), assistant manager at the Fine Art Society [more].
2. 'Sara'
Sarah Bernhardt (1844-1923), née Henrietta Rosine Bernard, actress [more]. The portrait in fact did not show Bernhardt; it was r.: Maud Franklin; v.: Study of Maud Franklin (M.693), sold at Bullock's bankruptcy sale of Oscar Wilde's effects, 24 April 1895 (cat. no. 123; see D. C. Thomson to JW, 24 April 1895, #05817). JW had offered the drawing to Brown on 21 September 1895, #03626. In the end it was not sold and remained in JW's studio until his death. See also JW to M. B. Huish, #02978 and #01314.
3. Herbert Marshall
Herbert Menzies Marshall (1841-1913), architect and topographical painter [more]. This relates to preparations for Mr Whistler's Lithographs, The Fine Art Society, London, 1895 which opened on 7 December. Marshall's exhibition was due to finish on 14 December.
