Sir,
I am directed to acknowledge your note of the 7th inst.[3], and to say that the President sends you his compliments.
He regrets that he has not, at this early hour, decided upon the list that he shall make out for the coming Private View of the Society[4] - indeed he is not at all sure, that he further proposes to trouble the Society by the [p. 2] organisation of Private Views, with which the members show, by their absence, such odd sympathy, or attempt to fill their Galleries on those, hitherto hail-fellow-well-met occasions, with people, whose presence would seem to bring about the flight, into their mountains, of the Members themselves!
The President begs however to assure you, that, were he again, through thoughtless joyousness to forget his more serious sense of the Society's comfort, in their own rooms, he certainly will, in no way impede your carrying out the bye laws with reference to his list.
