Jany 7th 1895

Dear Mr. Whistler,

I thought you would like to know the news. Lord Leighton[2] asked me to tell you how much he had enjoyed the lithographs. Seymour Haden[3] was here for a long time the other day. He left no message[.] Sidney Colvin[4] bought two[.] "The Philistines are upon thee[5]"

With kind regards
Yours sincerely

Ernest G. Brown

Notes:

1.  Ernest George Brown
Ernest George Brown (1853 or 1854-1915), assistant manager at the Fine Art Society [more]. JW staged a landmark show of his lithographs at the Society in December 1895 (Mr Whistler's Lithographs, The Fine Art Society, London, 1895). This letter does sound as if Brown is reporting on an exhibition, and it is possible that he dated the letter incorrectly.

2.  Lord Leighton
Frederic Leighton (1830-1896), painter and sculptor [more].

3.  Seymour Haden
Francis Seymour Haden (1818-1910), surgeon and etcher, JW's brother-in-law [more]. A bitter family quarrel in 1867 meant that the two men never spoke again.

4.  Sidney Colvin
Sidney Colvin (1845-1927), Keeper of Prints and Drawings, British Museum [more].

5.  The Philistines are upon thee
Delilah attempted to find the source of Samson's strength by binding him and warning 'the Philistines be upon thee, Samson', Judges 16.9.
