Jany 7th 1895
Dear Mr. Whistler,
I thought you would like to know the news. Lord Leighton asked me to tell you how much he had enjoyed the lithographs. Seymour Haden was here for a long time the other day. He left no message[.] Sidney Colvin bought two[.] "The Philistines are upon thee"
With kind regards
Ernest G. Brown
1. Ernest George Brown
Ernest George Brown (1853 or 1854-1915), assistant manager at the Fine Art Society [more]. JW staged a landmark show of his lithographs at the Society in December 1895 (Mr Whistler's Lithographs, The Fine Art Society, London, 1895). This letter does sound as if Brown is reporting on an exhibition, and it is possible that he dated the letter incorrectly.
5. The Philistines are upon thee
Delilah attempted to find the source of Samson's strength by binding him and warning 'the Philistines be upon thee, Samson', Judges 16.9.
