SIR, —

IT WAS, THEN, AT THE SALON, IN ONE MONTH OF JUNE - WHICH SEEMS BUT YESTERDAY TO MR. WHISTLER - THAT I BEHELD FOR THE FIRST TIME THE CANVAS OF "THE LITTLE CARDINAL^[5];" AND I AM HAPPY THAT MY MOMENTARY UNCERTAINTY AS TO THE PLACE WHERE I HAD SEEN IT SHOULD BE THE CAUSE FOR THE RENEWED DISPLAY OF ENTERTAINING HUMOURS, ON THE PART OF AN ECCENTRIC GENIUS WHOSE FINER WORK IT HAS BEEN FOR TWENTY YEARS MY PRIVILEGE TO PRAISE, BEFORE A PUBLIC THAT WAS NOT, AT THE BEGINNING, ANY TOO READY TO BELIEVE AND LISTEN.

2.  Frederick Wedmore
Frederick Wedmore (1844-1921), art critic [more]. On 19 November 1902, JW wrote to the Standard to complain that Wedmore had suggested in a review of an exhibition at the New Gallery that Grenat et or: Le Petit Cardinal (YMSM 469) was old work (#09448). Wedmore had in fact noted that the picture had been exhibited at the 12th Exhibition, Ouvrages de Peintures, Sculpture, Dessin, Gravure, Architecture et Objets d'Art, Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts, Paris, 1902, just before its arrival at the New Gallery.
