Notes:

1.  [September?] 1887
This letter copy is partially illegible, including part of the date.

2.  Claude Roger-Marx
Roger Marx (1859-1913), civil servant, art critic, journalist and collector [more].

3.  Ministère de l'Instruction Publique
It is possible that the fragmentary letter and note referring to JW are not connected.

4.  MsLfc
This copy was made by Professor Carl Barbier.

5.  Exposition Whistler No. 70
JW had had a substantial group of works on exhibition at Exposition Internationale de Peinture et de Sculpture, Galerie Georges Petit, Paris, 1887.

6.  croix de la légion
JW was made a Chevalier of the Légion d'Honneur and Officier in January 1892. However, since neither honour matches the date of this letter, it may be that the note has nothing to do with this.

7.  Jongkind
Johann Barthold Jongkind (1819-1891), painter and printmaker [more]. There are large square brackets around the remainder of the text, and the transcription is uncertain.
