Interrogatory 2 The Portrait of Thomas Carlyle
Exhibited at 48 Pall Mall at Mr Whistler's Exhibition 3 or 4 years ago.
3 No. 1 was then for sale in [p. 3] the Catalogue of the Exhibition & marked for 200 Guineas. No. 1 was the only one in the Catalogue marked No for sale - Subsequently I was willing to sell No. 7 but I forget at what price
Interrogatory 4 No. 2 Sold was given by me to Mr Graham in lieu of an old outstanding Commission of 150 Guineas
No. 3 [be?] sold to the Honourable Percy Wyndham at the Exhibition of the Dudley Gallery for 200 guineas
No. 4 given presented by me to Mrs Leyland [so that[5] the only one actually sold at 200 guineas is to the Honourable Percy Wyndham & Graham as stated above]
[p. 4] Interrogatory 5 - This inquisitorial Interrogatory must be answered by Counsel according to its legal requirements & those only
Nos 1 is & 7 are in the possession of Mrs Noseda Printseller of the Strand with several other pictures upon which she has advanced a sum of money to me [They were so deposited with Mrs Noseda for such advance by one Mr Charles Augustus Howell a friend of Mr Whistlers & as between Howell & Mrs Noseda they appear to be Mr Howells property] [p. 5] & so far as I know they are still in her possession at her Shop in the Strand aforesaidThey were so when
No. 2 is in the possession of Mr Graham aforesaid
No. 3 is in the possession of Honourable Percy Wyndham aforesaid
No. 4 is in the possession of Mrs Leyland aforesaid
No. 5 is in my possession
No. 6 is destroyed [In fact Mr Whistler has painted over it with a view to alter it & change its character as a picture[.] It is in a transition state]
[p. 6] The Portrait of Thomas Carlyle is in my possession or is sometimes in the possession keeping of the Engraver & sometimes in my [sic] mine[.] It is being engraved by Richard Josey for Subscribers
