You must take care that Mr Nathan[4] does not raise any objection to Mr Whistler pictures going to the Grosvenor[5] or other galleries

Lofts & Warner[6] have included two copper plates one belongs to Hogarth[7] & one to McLean[8] but these must be excluded from my inventory.
[p. 2] printing press also put down which belongs to Fagan[9] at the British Museum and does not belong to Whistler at all. This must be excluded

This letter may be in response to the auction house's letter of the same date (#11938).
3. ALS
'Re Whistler ... 1879' written in another hand in the left margin at right angles to the main text. '166' written in another hand, in a circle, just beneath the date. Legal documents, including those relating to JW's bankruptcy, were collected and numbered by Rose. JW was declared 'insolvent' on 6 May 1879. The auction of his paintings, etchings, drawings, oriental collection of prints and porcelain, and household effects, was held in the White House on 7 May 1879.
