Notes:

1.  [3 July 1888?]
Dated '3rd July, 1886' in publication (see below). This is incorrect, since the Society of British Artists did not become 'Royal' until the autumn of 1887, and JW resigned as President of the RBA on 4 June 1888. As a result he did not preside over the opening of the summer exhibition in 1888. The likely date of this letter is therefore 3 July 1888.

2.  Pearl Mary Craigie
Pearl Mary Craigie (1867-1906), née Richards, novelist [more].

3.  PLc
Partial text from sale catalogue, Maggs, London, cat. 497, 1927, lot 2629, described as 'Autograph letter signed [...] 2 pp., ob. 8vo.' The original letter has not been located.

4.   Royal Society of British Artists
Summer Exhibition, RBA, London, 1888.
