1st February. 85
Thank you my dear Whistler for having given me my picture from the Rejects. I am very fond of it as a reminder of times past -
I was very sorry not to see you on your last journey to Paris
Always
H. Fantin
Notes:
1. Henri Fantin Latour
Ignace-Henri-Jean-Théodore Fantin-Latour (1836-1904), artist [more].
2. Mon tableau des Refusés
H. Fantin-Latour, La Féerie (FL.214) (1863), Montreal, Musée des Beaux-Arts was one of two of Fantin's works rejected by the Salon and exhibited at the Salon des Refusés in 1863. The picture seems to have been in JW's possession from about this time. When Fantin heard of JW's bankruptcy in 1879, he asked him to return it via Elizabeth Ruth Edwards (ca 1833 - d.1907), née Enscombe, wife of Edwin Edwards [more] (Fantin to JW, 31 May 1879, #01089).
