My dear Master -
May I be permitted to write you that "no picture of Mr. Whistler's has been exposed in the Gallery Georges Petit[3] since the December Exhibition of Milady Sophie[4]["]; and information obtained without comment.
In a chance interview with Madame Carmen[5] on Monday, the passing of compliments led to considerable intimate discussion & I ventured towards the subject of this picture purloined.
Finally a certain willingness [p. 2] to profit by our Master's pleasure in recovering her portrait[6], has led Madame Carmen toward a few days meditation with the promise that in a week I shall hear. She seems very angry & wearied with having lost caste through her interview with the police and by pointing out that she alone seemed the proper person to treat with Monsieur Georges Petit, that Monsieur Whistler proposed nothing, and that her position with our Master could not be hurt by such proceeding!, she really & gladly acquiesced.
Whether I shall help a little to regain the masterpiece or only learn that I have not, is very dear to me. For the Master allowed so many glimpses of wonderful things to his Apprentices! And soon, au Salon, is the other faithful Apprentice[7] to see yet another from his easel: to her & my happiness

JW suspected that Carmen Rossi was removing and selling on works from his studio. On 14 June 1902, he managed to recover Rose et or: La Napolitaine (YMSM 505) with the Addams's assistance (see I. Addams to JW, #00119 and G. Bergaud to C. Addams, #04637).
