Nothing could be bother[3] [sic] my dear Ingram - and certainly I hope that it may come about - but I dont think this year - only because I shall want part of my work in America[4] -
Come on down and see me at the Studio say at about five 30 to-morrow (Monday) or at the same hour on Wednesday - From half past five to 6 o'clock -
The letter in Truth[5] was ruined in a way by a misprint - There was something charming in calling Labouchère[6] the Superior [sic], but 'Sapem[7]' is bathos indeed - whatever it may mean.

3. bother
Possibly a mis-reading of 'better'. It may be a reference to a proposed exhibition of JW's work at the Society of British Artists, which never materialised. This was eventually proposed to a meeting on 3 October 1887 and rescinded in the following month (see #13402).

6. Labouchère
Henry Du Pré Labouchère (1831-1912), journalist and Liberal MP [more], had complained that the Saturday Review had maligned JW ('Entre Nous', Truth, no. 503, vol. 20, 19 August 1886, p. 293, partially reprinted in Whistler, 1890, op. cit., pp. 166-168). JW made minor editorial changes in reprinting the piece (see Getscher, Robert H., and Paul G. Marks, James McNeill Whistler and John Singer Sargent. Two Annotated Bibliographies, New York and London, 1986, B. 36-37).
7. Sapem
JW meant to call Labouchère the 'Sapeur of modern progress' (i. e., pioneer), not 'Superior' as in this typescript copy, and not 'Sapem' as was printed. JW seized the opportunity to write pointing this out (JW to H. Labouchère, Truth, 9 September 1886, no. 506, vol. 20, p. 413; #11410).
