mais que fait tu [sic] - aller te noyer comme cela j'espère que cela va modérer tes amours de gymnastic et d'exercices du corps - ta position dans la mer m'a paru effroyable et [illegible] c'est supérieurement raconté [3]- de façon a vous faire jujer de l'horreur d'une pareille position - Ah! suis-je heureux d'avoir peur de l'eau même dans la cuvette. enfin malgré tout cela tu vas en Espagne![4] il faut bien acheter son bonheur ici bas. Quand tu y seras je te demande des lettres des lettres en quantité - tu Verras Velasquez c'est je crois une des choses les plus interressantes pour nous autres - Ne feras tu pas quelques esquisses - Ah je suis bien curieux de savoir ce que c'est et je n'ai encore vu que des gens qui n'y pouvaient rien comprendre. - Eh! bien ton tableau d'après le croquis[5] me parait très bien [p. 2] disposé, les lignes du ciel, de la mer la position des personnages tout cela me parait très bien, mais très bien en ouvrant la lettre cela m'a fait de suite un bon effet cette impression d'ornement pittoresque - qui fait qu'un bon tableau parait aussi agreable a l'oeil - a l'envers et dans tout les sens. Arrangement, disposition, composition. etc - mots mysterieux lois harmonieuses - nullement de convention - besoins de l'Artiste gloire des Raphaël Michel-Ange etc etc - pour moi un begaïment une hésitation, une affaire de sentiment - qui doit être pourtant une loi, une[6] chose mathematiques, comme la forme, comme la lumiere, la couleur Je trouve des rapprochementes avec la coloration qui procède par oppositions pour arriver à l'harmonie c'est a dire à faire d'une toile un tout, de mettre sur un petit espace une image avec toutes les forces tout les principes de la nature - au lieu d'en prendre une partie tiens tu vois je rature je ne peux plus [p. 3] dire ce que je veux dire ah, la plume ne sert que les gens qui ont des banalités à dire. - . Whistler quand je vais débrouiller tout cela je crois que je vais faire quelque choses mais que d'années encore et puis la vie m'embète je deviens sensible a de certaines jouissances, mais je tuerais tout cela et puis, enfin - c'est stupide, je suis bien bête je crois qu'il y a quelques choses encore à faire. - . la politique des Eaux fortistes[7]. quelles stupidités, mais chut, Cadart[8] revient de Londres avec la planche de Mr Haden[9] -. il veut je crois (avec delattre[10]) renvoyer les gens qui font quelques choses et n'avoir que des choses qui plaisent au plus public des choses fini come il disent. ainsi Legros[11]. Manet[12]. Bracquemond[13], je les crois au moment ou ils voudraient faire un coup d'état. il n'osent pas encore. pour ton envoie. mais tu n'a pas à te proposer tu en est, tu comprends qu'il n'y a pas a se gener avec les imbeciles, l'on s'impose tu envoie, tu parais. - . Je dirais a Cadart (si tu veux) Whistler vous donneras une planche [p. 4] mais il veut entrer sans examen l'on tireras sans la voir -. J'en ai fait une, tu sais trop ce que sait pour te douter que cela n'a rien d'une Eaux fortes. c'est un croquis a la plume, ils vont me balancer je le vois, les amis du Jury ne se sont pas beaucoup occupé de ça et ce sera pour moi un prétexte pour sortir de la societé avec hauteur et dédain - Baudelaire[14], Jonkind[15] balançoire blague! des gens qui parle et qui font des choses qu'il ne connaissent pas - J'ai vu peu Mr Haden a seconde visite j'ai plusieurs choses a lui faire au Louvre. Drouet[16] est de retour de Bretagne avec un héritage il va partir l'hiver en Sicile faire une statue en marbre[,] Gericault[17] est sur un piedestal a l'Exposition de louvre[,] il me parle de lui faire quelques choses au Louvre Voila. hein! Drouet tu le vois riche. il est beau. il protège. - . Moi je doute. dam, on pose tant dans ce monde. Ernest[18] je le vois rarement il a paru pas content de toi - Je verrais la Gazette des Beaux Arts pour te dire ce qu'il y a. L'Exposition du Boulevard[19] fermé jusqu'au 1er Decembre 62[.] Alphonse[20] ne fait rien, pas le sou Je crains bien Clichy[21]. Il est bien le vieux peintre ami des Van den ...[22] et du Bitume

When you are there you must send me letters quantities of letters - you will see Velasquez - I believe it is one of the most interesting things for us artists - Will you not make a few sketches - Oh I am very curious to know what it is like and I have only met people who could not understand any of it. - Well! according to the sketch your picture seems well- [p. 2] composed, the lines of sky, sea, the position of the figures all that seems very, very well done[,] on opening the letter it struck me immediately, an impression of decorative ornamentation which makes a good picture appeal to the eye as well - upside down and any other way up. Arrangement, layout, composition. etc - mysterious words harmonious laws - in no way conventional - needs of the Artist glory of the Raphaels Michelangelos etc etc - for me a repetition a hesitation, a matter of feeling - which should also be a law, a mathematical thing, like form, like light, colour[.] I find similarities with the colour method which works by opposing colours to arrive at a harmony that is to say to make a canvas a complete whole, to put into a small space an image with all the forces all the principles of nature - instead of showing a part of it well as you see I'm crossing out I can't [p. 3] say what I want any more[,] oh pens are only useful for people who write platitudes. - Whistler when I unravel all that I believe I shall make something of it but not for years yet and also life irritates me I am becoming aware of certain pleasures, but I would throw it all up and in any case - it's silly, I am really stupid I think there are still things to do. - the Etchers' politics. how stupid but shush, Cadart is coming back from London with Mr Haden's plate -. I think he wants (with Delatre) to turn down all the people who are doing anything and only keep the things which please the most public[,] what they call finish[,] so for Legros, Manet, Bracquemond, I shall believe them the moment they stage a coup d'etat. they don't dare yet. as for your entry, it's not a question of making a proposal[,] you are there, you understand you must not hold back on account of idiots, you set yourself up, you send something in, you are seen. - I will tell Cadart (if you wish) Whistler will give you a plate [p. 4] but he wishes to enter it without examination, it is to be selected without being seen -. I have done one, you know what it is too well to think that it is an etching, it is a pen sketch, they will throw me out I know, the friends of the Jury were not very interested in it and it will be an excuse for me to leave the society with pride and contempt - Baudelaire, Jonkind thrown out rubbish! people who talk and do things which they know nothing about - I saw Mr Haden briefly on a second visit I have several things to do for him at the Louvre. 7. Eaux fortistes
La Société des Aquafortistes was founded on 31 May 1862 by the publisher Alfred Cadart; he had a shop in the rue de Richelieu which provided etching facilities and an exhibition gallery. Membership was by invitation only and a list of proposed artists was drawn up by Cadart; the artists had to submit a piece of work to the five-member jury. See J.
