Mortimer Luddington Menpes (1860-1938), artist [more]. Menpes was JW's pupil and assistant. He describes preparations for JW's exhibitions in Menpes, Mortimer, Whistler as I Knew Him, London, 1904.

The frames were for either 'Notes' - 'Harmonies' - 'Nocturnes', Messrs Dowdeswell, London, 1884, or the second show of that name in 1886. They were in three shades of gold to complement the pictures.
