William Pugin Thornton was the son of Mary J. Thornton, and in 1881 was living at 42 Devonshire Strett with his mother and sisters Mary J. and Lucy G. Thornton.
William Pugin Thornton, FRCS (1872), was a surgeon specialising in diseases of the throat. He was probably a colleague of JW's brother Dr W. McN. Whistler. He may have known JW in the mid-seventies, when his name appears in an address book (#12714).
In 1892 he was appointed Surgeon-Lieutenant of the Royal East Kent Yeomanry Cavalry. He was medical officer at Canterbury prison in 1902.
