Irish born, Eyre Massey Shaw, married Anna Dove of Lisbon, who died in 1897. In 1901, after his retirement, he was living in St George's, Hanover Square.
He was Chief of London Metropolitan Fire Brigade for thirty years, from 1861-1891. It was towards the end of this time that he appears to have known Whistler, presumably not in a professional capacity. He was the author of several books relating to his experiences: Fires in Theatres, Fires and Fire Brigades, and Fire Protection. He was also Chairman of the Metropolitan Electric Company.
UK census 1901.
