Identity:
Irish born, Eyre Massey Shaw, married Anna Dove of Lisbon, who died in 1897. In 1901, after his retirement, he was living in St George's, Hanover Square.
Life:
He was Chief of London Metropolitan Fire Brigade for thirty years, from 1861-1891. It was towards the end of this time that he appears to have known Whistler, presumably not in a professional capacity. He was the author of several books relating to his experiences: Fires in Theatres, Fires and Fire Brigades, and Fire Protection. He was also Chairman of the Metropolitan Electric Company.
