Place of Death:

Identity:

Arthur Frederick Payne was an etcher and painter.

Life:

In the 1870s JW had the framemaker and decorator Frederick Fox instruct Payne as to the manner in which JW arranged his palette. He told Payne that Fox 'can do almost anything - so if you want anything [lodged?] in your studio at any time do employ Fox'. He added, 'he is not well off though - so you must pay him at once' (#09354). Payne's name was included in a list by JW that may have been for the private view of his 1874 Pall Mall exhibition or an 1876 subscription list for his envisaged Venice etchings. At this time he was living at 2 Cromwell Place (#12714).

Payne exhibited between 1880 and 1884, showing at the Grosvenor Gallery and Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours.
