Identity:

Mihály (von) Munkácsy was a painter of interiors, portraits, historical scenes and genre.

Life:

He studied at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Vienna in 1864 and later at the Munich Academy. In 1871 he settled in Paris where an exclusive contract with the art dealer Charles Sedelmeyer had considerable influence over his output and subject matter. He also carried out some public commissions - a ceiling painting for the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna, and historical works such as Taking the Land (1893) for the Budapest Parliament building.
