Identity:

Luitpold Karl Joseph Wilhelm Ludwig Luitpold was the third son of Ludwig I of Bavaria. In 1884 he married Archduchess Augustine of Tuscany.

Life:

Field Marshal and Inspector General of the Bavarian Army, he was Prince Regent of Bavaria from 9 June 1886 to 12 December 1912. He was the most important Munich collector of his day, and owned 529 pictures mostly by Munich artists. He spent 900,000 marks on paintings between the early 1850s and his death. JW exhibited work in Munich and was highly acclaimed and honoured in Bavaria.
