Charles Trowbridge ('Frank') Larned was the son of Benjamin Frank Larned, and Elizabeth Rachel Newman (d. 1856). Two portraits of her were painted by the American artist Charles Bird King (1785-1862), who was a first cousin of C. T. Larned's grandmother, Elizabeth Hannah Newman.
C. T. Larned is easily confused with Frank Larned Hunt, a distant cousin, who was the son of Martha Bull Larned Hunt of Detroit, and who was friendly with JW at West Point and during JW's time at the U.S. Coastal Survey in Washington DC.
C. T. Larned was a classmate of JW's, but, like JW, failed to complete his West Point training. However, he continued to serve in the regular army, first as a paymaster in the Civil War, and rising to become Deputy Paymaster General in 1880.
