He was a poet, writer and editor.
He was a poet (he devoted an ode to Saint Gaudens) and writer on the American Civil War and other subjects. He was the associate editor of The Century, later Scribner's, and it was in this capacity that he was in touch with JW in the late 1890s. He was later the editor of the Century Magazine, 1909-1913.
From 1920-1921 he was the American Ambassador in Rome. Shortly afterwards he published a 600 page autobiography Remembered Yesterdays ..., Boston, 1923.
