He married Margaret Van den Heuvel, of New York City.

Life:

He graduated from Yale in 1808, was admitted to the bar in 1811. He practised in New Haven, CT, which he represented in the state legislature, 1820-25. In 1846 he was appointed US Minister to Russia by President Polk. He resigned the office in 1848, leaving his son, Colin Macrae, as chargé d'affaires to the close of his official term. He became Mayor of New Haven in 1851.
