George Hay was a genre and figure painter.


Hay was an active exhibitor, showing at the Dowdeswell Galleries in London, the Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts and the Royal Scottish Academy. He was elected an associate of the RSA in 1869 and made a full member in 1876. He acted as the Academy's Secretary from 1881 to 1907. In March 1902 he wrote to JW in this capacity, notifying him that the General Assembly of the RSA had decided to award him honorary membership, in 'recognition of the high position you have made for yourself in art' (#05259). Hay sent JW his diploma and medal in November of this year (#05262). In 1910 Hay himself was awarded an honorary membership.
