A New Yorker, Sarah Poulterer married Joseph Harrison in 1836 and had at least five children: Annie (b. 1839); William Henry (b. 1837); Alicia McNeill (b. 1845); Marie Olga (b. 1847); Theodore Leland (b. 1849).
She moved to St Petersburg, Russia in 1843, when her husband's firm was contracted by the Russian government to build locomotives and freight cars, and lived there until 1850. Her husband was also an important art collector. After his death Sarah disposed much of the collection.
