John Harris was an American Consul in Venice.
Harris was American Consul from 1870 until his death in 1881. He and his wife lived at 2727 San Maurizio, looking over the Grand Canal. They entertained JW and Luke Fildes at the American Consulate in Venice in 1880. JW wrote to his mother: 'Mrs Harris the wife of the American Consul has been very charming - always asking me to her house and presenting me to all her best acquaintances - She is a dear old lady and I know you would like her - So you see I have not been without friends Mother, and notwithstanding the fearful climate, not absolutely forlorn and cheerless' (#03125). JW shared with the family his copies of the World (#11563).
