10th December 2003 - Whistler's Wine
Two bottles of a sparkling Scharzhofberg Riesling Brut
Two bottles of a sparkling Scharzhofberg Riesling Brut (Mosel-Saar-Ruwer) wine were kindly gifted to the Centre for Whistler Studies by Grischka Petri at the Whistler Centenary Conference in September 2003.
This wine is the same kind as appears on a bill dating from March 1866. Whistler had ordered "1 case 6 doz. Sparkling Scharzhofberg" totalling £19. 10. 00, plus also the same quantity of Moselle wine for another £19 (LCMS PWC, see #08939). Unfortunately for the wineseller S. Ladenburg and Co., Whistler did not pay the bill, and on 10 July 1878 the company again invoiced the artist (LCMS PWC, see #08934). However, the bill remained unpaid, and is recorded in Whistler's bankruptcy records in May 1879.
Many thanks Grischka for the gift - hopefully you did not follow Whistler's example when it came to paying!
