Mon cher ami -
Pardonnez moi bien -
My dear friend -
I have just received the enclosed -
It is almost the same cutting as I sent you the other day with an alteration for Paris - because they want it to appear in an English paper there -
I then remembered what you told me about Dr Evans' paper - and I dared to promise that it would not be impossible to arrange it? - What do you think? -
Forgive me -
My dear friend - I have just been brought the enclosed -
It is more or less the same clipping that I had sent you the other day with a change for Paris - for one would like that to appear in an English newspaper over there -
I then remembered what you told me about Dr Evans' newspaper - and I took the liberty of promising that it would not be impossible to arrange it? What do you think about it?
Please forgive me
Monsieur Stephane Mallarmé

1. 7 January 1889
Dated from postmark. The date added in another hand is incorrect.
Published in Barbier, Carl P., 'Whistler and Mallarmé,' The College Courant, no. 25, and in Barbier, Carl P., ed., Correspondance Mallarmé-Whistler: Histoire de la grande amitié de leurs dernières années, Paris, 1964 [GM, A.28], no. XIV, p. 30.
Probably a cutting from L'Independance Belge, 9 January 1899, which was published in the Paris edition of the New York Herald, 10 January 1889. It described JW's confrontation with William Stott of Oldham (1857-1900), genre and landscape painter [more], at the Hogarth Club (see #02142).
